One exciting aspect of the Illinois Renaissance project is the addition of grand entryways welcoming Illini fans to Historic Memorial Stadium. Upon completion of the renovation, the entire stadium will be surrounded by wrought-iron fencing, much like that which currently encloses the practice fields directly east of the stadium.
Entry to the stadium will be gained at one of six large portals, spaced intermittently around the perimeter of the stadium grounds. Once inside the new perimeter, guests will be free to move throughout the grounds, improving pedestrian traffic and aiding in gameday security. Because all fan traffic will be funneled through these areas, the gated entryways will serve as the face of the renovated stadium, warmly welcoming visitors to the most breathtaking venue in all of college football. Since the stadium’s construction in 1923, over 20 million spectators have attended events at Memorial Stadium. Grand West Entryway
Because the new hospitality facilities on the stadium’s west side will be used year-round for University, athletic department, and community functions, the new entryway located on the stadium’s west side will serve as the renovated Memorial Stadium’s front door. The west entryway will feature a twelve-foot statute of Illini legend Red Grange located at the end of a long promenade approaching the stadium from First Street. Coupled with the impressive west façade, which will artfully blend the historic architecture of the west colonnade with the modern Memorial Stadium Pavilion, the west entryway promises to become the stadium’s signature elevation.
