Swimmers and divers practice and compete in the Illinois Natatorium located in the Intramural Physical Education (IMPE) Building on the University of Illinois campus. IMPE is a modern building designed by Chicago architects Holabird and Root in 1968.
The Illinois Natatorium features a 50-meter by 25-yard pool of eight competitive lanes for varsity swimming, as well as an outdoor 50-meter six-lane pool. The pool water is temperature and chlorine regulated by a computerized filter system, with rough water during competition being minimized by trench drains.
Also featured in the natatorium is a separate diving area adjacent to the competitive swimming lanes. The diving facilities include two 1-meter springboards over 13½ feet of water and two 3-meter springboards over 14 feet of water. All springboards are maxi-flex Model “B” and are mounted on Dura-Firm fulcrums and hinges on top of welded Kiefer stainless steel standards.
The dry-land equipment includes: one trampoline and one dry-land diving board, with an overhead spotting rig. Underwater viewing ports allow coaches to critique swimmers from below the water line.
The facility has added the Colorado Time system No. 5, one of the most sophisticated timing units available. This system provides complete and accurate meet results and times quickly and efficiently.
IMPE is currently undergoing a two-phase renovation and expansion at a cost of $82.7 million. The two year project will be finished by June 1, 2008 and will add 34,000 square feet of strength and conditioning space (weight machines and cardiovascular equipment, such as treadmills), a quarter-mile track, several new basketball/volleyball courts, a climbing wall, a 150-seat auditorium, multipurpose rooms and an instructional kitchen for nutrition education.
